The opening event of the BWCS showing calendar for 2023 saw a packed crowd gathered in the sunshine at South Suffolk Show on Sunday 14th May. Breeders were glad to be back on the circuit once again and had put forward a strong selection of animals for judge Mr James Brain, Warwickshire, to cast his eye over.
It was the senior heifer class winner and Female Champion De Beauvoir Smart Sally from Mrs A Dunn, Essex, which was selected as the eventual Breed Champion, also picking up the Beachern Trophy, a special award given for the best heifer. This homebred two-year-old is sired by Castleton Brenin and out of De Beauvoir Starzie, a daughter of the highly successful bull Dallyashes Howitzer, a former shown champion in his own right and a prolific producer of quality cattle for the De Beauvoir herd.
The Reserve Breed Championship went to the Male Champion Albany Octavius from Mr L Cook, Cambridgeshire. Winner of the junior bull class, this 16-month-old is sired by Nidderdale Alladin (classified EX91, son of 2015 BWCS Bull of the Year Nidderdale Ryan) and out of Albany Ostrich (VG86).
Reserve Female Champion and runner-up Best Heifer was the junior heifer class winner Woodbastwick Sorcha, bred and exhibited by Rotac Farms, Norfolk. This C Grade heifer's dam line traces back to the venerable cow Woodbastwick Doubtful Sound, herself a tremendously impressive show animal and producer of a number of successful progeny originating from the Woodbastwick herd.
Thanks go to the exhibitors and handlers for putting forward another excellent display of cattle at the event, the standard of which was highly competitive, and it was great to see such a strong start to the season for our breed.
