With two sets of classes available to British White cattle competitors at the Royal Three Counties Show - the first on Friday 16th June amongst the beef breeds and the second on Sunday 18th as part of the National Rare and Minority Breeds Show - there was ample opportunity for our exhibitors to scoop up plenty of prize cards, and was interesting to see how the two different judges interpreted the line-up across the two days of breed classes.
This year it seemed that both judges were largely in agreement, bringing to the Breed Champion and Reserve placings the same two animals, though in alternate positions! On Friday, it was the yearling bull Lordswood Finley from James Brain, Stratford, which topped the rankings under judge Mr J Playfair-Hannay of Roxburghshire. An AI son of the renowned former BWCS Bull of the Year De Beauvoir Huckleberry Finn (bred by Mrs A Dunn in 1998), this bull is out of Woodbastwick Lacoste, originally purchased from Rotac Farms at the BWCS Melton Mowbray Show & Sale in 2016. Standing in the Breed Champion spot for the Sunday classes judged by Mr J Westaway, Devon, was two-year-old calved heifer Templar Libby 192 from K & RP Harding, Heather. Sired by Woodbastwick Doublet and shown with her first calf at foot, this heifer is out of Templar Isla 156, herself a former class winner in the National Rare & Minority Breeds Show back in 2020.
Winning the class for junior heifers on both days of the show was another of the Harding's exhibits, the February 2022-born Templar Madison 208. By Castleton Jupiter (EX93), this heifer is from the same group as two others by the same sire - Templar Mandarine 211 and Templar Marlin 215 - which averaged 2600gns at the BWCS Spring Sale at Melton Mowbray in April. Also taking first prize in both sets of classes was the three-year-old winner of the cow class, Dallyashes Lappet, owned and exhibited by Mathew Jones, Llanpumpsaint. Bred by the Jones' fellow exhibitor and neighbour Angie Hamilton, this young cow was praised for her length and depth of body, along with her smart March-born heifer calf at foot Waun Wern Loli, which took a commendable second place in her own right amongst a strong junior heifer class on Friday.
Our thanks go to all of the exhibitors and supporters who worked hard to present a wonderful turnout of stock, whilst also manning the BWCS trade stand for the duration of the show and speaking to prospective new breeders.
