Closing out a tremendous summer show season of British White breed classes, Mid Somerset Show was held on Sunday 18th August with a pleasing entry forward for judge Edward Mills, Bristol.
Taking the Breed Championship with their four-year-old stock bull Cadarn Freighter were the team from The Newt in Somerset, with farm manager Cameron Knee and head stockman John McWilliams exhibiting the estate's British White cattle for the first time in 2024. Purchased in 2022 from breeder Mark Kennett, this bull has already sired well over 100 calves for the Emily herd and has been a firm favourite on the farm.
Standing as Reserve Breed Champion on the day was another from the senior bull class, two-year-old Tollesbury Pythagoras. Recently purchased by Chris and Katie Davis for their newly-established Old Wolford herd in Devon from Essex-based breeder Vivien St Joseph, this promising young bull has had a very successful run on the show circuit this year. The Davis family had further success in the senior cow class with three-year-old first-calver Tismans Peony (VG85), as well as in the calf class with her April-born heifer calf Old Wolford Pikachu, both coming away with first prizes.
Awarded the top spot in the senior heifer class was the homebred in-calf two-year-old Emily Maple from The Newt in Somerset, while in the junior heifer section it was yearling Marshbrook Snapdragon, bred and exhibited by Elayna Astbury, which beat her stablemate Marshbrook Debutante to first place.
